Transportation Funding for Field Trips
for Windham County Public Schools
In the fall of 2018, The Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts and the Newell D. Hale Foundation launched Wheels to Learning to provide transportation funding for field trips for all K-12 Windham County, Connecticut public schools traveling to designated non-profit cultural institutions in the arts, sciences and humanities.
About Wheels to Learning
Every child deserves access to high quality educational opportunities beyond their classroom walls. These enriching experiences inspire curiosity, discovery, and the love of learning. Wheels to Learning supports these opportunities for Windham County students, and the simple application process makes it easy for schools to access this transportation funding.
Since its inception, the Wheels to Learning program has provided over $203,349 of transportation grants benefiting approximately 23,818 students. These grants were provided to 39 schools for 386 field trips to 21 different educational venues.
Modeled after Wheels to Learning in Windham County, Wheels to Learning Vermont was launched by the Vermont Standard in the 2025-26 school year. In its inaugural year,
Wheels to Learning Vermont funded 34 field trips across four school districts to 18 unique venues. We are excited to see this initiative grow in support of student access to out of classroom learning.For more information, please visit their website at wheelstolearningvt.org.
