Welcome to Wheels to Learning

Wheels to Learning provides transportation funding for field trips for Windham County, Connecticut public schools traveling to designated non-profit educational and cultural institutions.

About Wheels to Learning

Wheels to Learning is a pilot program serving Windham County, Connecticut public schools that seeks to understand if providing funding for transportation will increase access to out-of-classroom enriching learning experiences.

The program was launched during the 2018-2019 school year.  Field trip activities ceased due to the pandemic and the program was put on hold from spring 2020 until spring 2022.  Despite this interruption, Wheels to Learning has provided over $32,000 of transportation grants benefitting approximately 6,000 students.  These grants were provided to 30 schools for 85 fieldtrips to ten different educational venues.

The program was launched and funded by The Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts and the Newell D. Hale Foundation.  The funders believe that every child should have access to quality educational opportunities and, through Wheels to Learning, seek to address the prohibitive cost of busing which is often an impediment to the enriching experience of school field trips.
