Welcome to Wheels to Learning

In the fall of 2018, The Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts and the Newell D. Hale Foundation launched Wheels to Learning as a pilot program to provide transportation funding for field trips for all K-12 Windham County, Connecticut public schools traveling to designated non-profit cultural institutions in the arts, sciences and humanities.

About Wheels to Learning

Wheels to Learning is a pilot program serving Windham County, Connecticut K-12 public schools that seeks to understand if providing funding for transportation will increase access to out-of-classroom enriching learning experiences.

The program was launched during the 2018-2019 school year.  Field trip activities ceased due to the pandemic and the program was put on hold from spring 2020 until spring 2022.  The program was relaunched for the 2022-2023 school year. Wheels to Learning has provided over $108,000 of transportation grants benefitting approximately 13,850 students.  These grants were provided to 37 schools for 243 field trips to 14 different educational venues.

The program was launched and funded by The Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts and the Newell D. Hale Foundation.  The funders believe that every child should have access to quality educational opportunities and, through Wheels to Learning, seek to address the prohibitive cost of busing which is often an impediment to the enriching experience of school field trips.
